It was good to be at home and Signal Mountain made the most of it, sweeping Bledsoe County 11-7 and 7-0 in a high school baseball doubleheader Friday.
The Eagles, though in a still-new school with new facilities, had not been able to play at home because their field has been a quagmire. It was still quite soft in the outfield — one ball hit to left plopped and basically buried itself — but at least it was playable.
“We’ve played three games at Red Bank. Basically we have played on the road,” Signal Mountain coach Bill Price said.
“It’s a lack of drainage, but we have a commitment for $25,000, and we’ll start on a drainage system as soon as the season is over. I don’t know how much of the field we’ll have to take up. We already have sprinklers, but I’ll leave that to the engineers.”
The Eagles played in the first game as if they hadn’t been on their home field, committing six errors. The field is entirely grass except for cutouts around the bases and pitcher’s mound, which changes the way a ball bounces.
