A car leaking gas caused teachers to herd approximately 300 elementary students out of the building at Brown Academy today while responders worked to contain and clean the hazard.
Principal Emily Baker said a parent came to pick up their child shortly after 2 p.m. but the car had sprung a leak and was spilling gas onto the road.
The smell was strong enough that Baker decided to evacuate the students out the back of the building and called police.
She said police blocked off the road while firefighters dealt with the spill before coming inside to check for fumes in the building.
Students were allowed to come back inside from their short, unexpected field trip after about twenty minutes.
“Fortunately, it was a good day and it wasn’t freezing or pouring outside” Baker said.
“And we got a fire drill in.”
