McDowell creates memory as survivor

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — The U.S. Open at Pebble Beach has produced some of the most memorable shots in golf history.

Take Jack Nicklaus’ 1-iron that hopped and hit the pin in 1972, Tom Kite’s chip on No. 7 in 1992 and Tom Watson’s chip-in on No. 17 in 1982 — all shots that sealed victory.

But the 2010 version of the Open will not have the same sort of legacy. It will be remembered for the tragedy that Dustin Johnson experienced.

“It’s always difficult to watch a guy do what he did,” winner Graeme McDowell said of Johnson. “I felt sorry for him because we’ve all been there. We’ve all experienced that. It’s not a lot of fun.”

Failed ascents by Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els also were a big part of Sunday’s final round.
