Courter: Things I Wish My Kids would Ask Me

Keep an open mind at job fairs to find the best fit

Editor’s note: Barry Courter has a 26-year-old son who is a college graduate and a 21-year-old daughter who is a college senior. Each week he poses a question he wishes they would ask.

Q: Dad, what should I be looking for at a job fair?

A: Keep an open mind. Get the list of who will be there and target ones you are seriously interested in. Don’t be afraid to venture out. There will be a company or industry you’ve never considered that might have what you want and more. What you think you want today might not be best for you long-term. And don’t forget to write thank-you notes to people you talk to.
