McLEAN, Va. (AP) – Republican Ed Gillespie has scheduled a news conference to discuss the Virginia Senate race that he’s narrowly trailing in against the Democratic incumbent, Mark Warner.
Warner claimed a second-term victory late Tuesday. The Associated Press has said the race is too close to call. Gillespie hasn’t conceded, but he’s facing questions about whether he will.
He’s said he wants the vote-counting process to play out.
The latest numbers give Warner a lead of more than 16,000 votes – nearly a percentage point – out of more than 2 million ballots cast.
The margin hasn’t changed significantly since election night.
If the numbers hold, Gillespie would be entitled to ask for a recount under state law. He’d have to pay for it himself.
Gillespie plans to speak to reporters Friday afternoon.
