TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Tuscaloosa police say the family of a man who died while being taken into custody will be shown unedited video footage of the encounter before the raw footage is released publicly.
Police Chief Steven Anderson said Monday that he has reviewed video and audio of the encounter between 35-year-old Anthony Dewayne Ware and police.
Authorities have said officers responded to a call that Ware, who was wanted on charges of attempting to elude police, was sitting on the front porch of an apartment Friday night. Police said Ware ran into nearby woods and struggled with officers when they caught up with him.
Police say officers sprayed Ware with pepper spray and handcuffed him. They say Ware began having trouble breathing and collapsed as they were walking out of the woods.
