Manger a Paris: Tripping the food fantastic in the City of Lights

Veal is on many menus in Paris, and at La Grappa d'Or, it's simmered for hours with vegetables, creating a fork-tender dish known as Blanquete de Veau a l'Ancienne.

Croque de Monsieur is an unusual name for a cheese sandwich, but don't let the name fool you. They're a French favorite. At Le Gribouille in La Marais, they're made with ham and lots of emmental cheese on a thick slice of bread and baked till it's all melted, gooey and delicious.

You might not consider a Chinese meal when in Paris, but to take a break from French fare, many do. And they find Le Pivoine Chinoise to be one of the best and most affordable in the city. It's a favorite for locals, if that tells you anything.

The menu at Le Vieille Tour, located off the town square in the Mouffetard neighborhood of the Fifth Arrondissement, is filled with traditional French fare, such as boeuf bourguignon.

Creperies about along the streets of Paris and one of the favorites is one with warm Nutella nestled inside its folds. It's an after-dinner street food popular among tourists and locals alike. Most run under 4 euros and are large enough to share.

Fresh vegetables tumble from their containers in vegetable markets, a familiar site along streets such as this one in the Fourth Arrondissement.

What is a trip to France without a taste of quiche? At Queen Ann, the selections change daily, but might include spinach and French cheeses in a made-from-scratch crust. Quiche comes with a beautiful, fresh salad for under 10 euros.

Walking along Boulevard Saint-Germaine and seeing a restaurant named Tennessee is quite a surprise.

The French onion soup, chock-full of onions, melted cheese and bread, at Bistrot des Martyrs is possibly the best in the city.

The truffle pizza at Fratelli, located along Boulevard Malesherbes in the Seventh Arrondissement, is a house favorite. At 17 euros, it can easily feed two.
