Area schools closed; evening activities canceled

Staff report

A fine, heavy snow, some sleet and potentially icy conditions forced most tri-state area school systems to close all day today or dismiss early.

Most schools officials contacted today said they would wait until Sunday, at the earliest, to decide whether to hold classes on Monday.

“We’ll evaluate the temperature and try to make the call pretty early Sunday,” Marion County, Tenn., Director of Schools Mark Griffith said late today.

Also in Tennessee, schools directors Johnny Cordell in Sequatchie County and David Pierce in McMinn County said they would wait until Sunday for any decisions.

Dalton, Ga., schools spokeswoman Deana Farmer echoed the plan for the Georgia city school system.

“We’ll decide over the weekend,” Ms. Farmer said.

In Hamilton County, Tenn., and Whitfield County, Ga., afterschool child care and all evening extracurricular activities are canceled today. Whitfield officials also said all weekend activities are canceled.
