THE MATCHUP
Virginia Military Institute hasn’t been able to stop a losing streak that dates back to 2016 and is now 20 games long, but it hasn’t been because of any offensive inefficiencies. The Keydets rank second in the Southern Conference and third in the Football Championship Subdivision in passing offense this season, when they have averaged just more than 26 points per game. Meanwhile, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s defense is second in the SoCon against the pass in both efficiency and yards allowed. If UTC’s defensive line is able to put pressure on VMI sophomore quarterback Reece Udinski, the Mocs should be able to slow down the Keydets’ offense and create some big plays, such as sacks, tackles for loss and takeaways.
ONES TO WATCH
UTC wide receivers averaged more than 18 yards per catch during the team’s 4-0 start, in part because the threat of a rushing attack led to some deep-ball opportunities downfield for quarterback Nick Tiano and his trio of top targets: Bryce Nunnelly, Wil Young and Joseph Parker. In the past three games, that number has dipped to 9 yards a reception. Getting running back Tyrell Price going and establishing the ground game early today could lead to a few of those downfield completions and big plays that had made the UTC offensive so explosive early this season.
IN THE END
The Mocs’ ultimate goal of making the FCS playoffs is well within reach, but they can’t do that unless they beat VMI. Based on records, results and stats, that shouldn’t be difficult for UTC. The Keydets have some potency in their passing game, but that’s something that plays right into what the Mocs have handled best. The visitors may generate a big play or two, but UTC will roll on homecoming in a game likely to be more one-sided than the final score will suggest.
PREDICTION
UTC 34, VMI 14
