Sherry Nickell explains her mythical works in art demonstration

Glass artist Sherry Nickell, whose works include “Keeper of the Spiral Door,” can be seen at work on upcoming projects during a hot glass demonstration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at River Gallery, 400 E. Second St.

Nickell says the Greek myth of the mother and daughter Demeter and Persephone “speaks most eloquently to me as an artist” because it is the story of the cycles of life, the continuum that includes life, death and rebirth.

The symbols found in the belly of her goddesses are the five universal signs of life, and each has a bindu, the Hindu sacred seed of life.
