MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — A slew of errors had put Boyd-Buchanan in an early hole, but a bobbled grounder by Adamsville in the seventh inning opened the door for the Buccaneers to step into the Class A baseball state championship game.
The Bucs committed five of their eight errors in the first two innings but rallied to manufacture three runs in the top of the seventh, then hang on for a 6-5 victory. They face Decatur County today at 5 p.m. EDT at Blackman High School for the state title.
“We haven’t made eight errors since April,” Bucs coach Steve Robbins said. “I told the guys that we only gave them three runs off all those errors, so we were still in it.”
Junior right-hander Tyler Garner pitched the whole game and kept Boyd-Buchanan in it by allowing only seven hits and one earned run.
“It was 92 degrees on the bank clock when we pulled in, so I know Tyler was tired by the end,” Robbins said. “But he knew he had to stay out there for us. We got in one last mess there at the end, but he fought back and got out of it. That was just pure guts.”
