Ask a doctor

Q: Is there an ideal candidate for the Lap-Band surgery?

A: To maximize the benefits of the Lap-Band surgery, such a patient would be more than 75 pounds overweight and have the ability to understand the band and the needed eating behavior, which includes small portions, thorough chewing, no carbonated drinks and plenty of water (though none with the meal).

Ideally, patients should have no geographic or personal barriers for adherence. The ability to come back for required follow-up visits and band adjustments are essential for weight-loss success.

Patients should be allowed to come back for adjustments, instructions, support groups and follow-up as needed. The ability to establish consistent exercise will add to the chances for success.
