Mainers celebrating native son’s gold medal

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – People across Maine are celebrating the Olympic gold medal won by native son Seth Wescott in a wild snowboardcross run at the Vancouver Olympics.

About 100 of Wescott’s friends and supporters gathered at a Carrabassett Valley bar Monday afternoon while the race was called by patron Warren Gerow who was getting live updates on the race from his father in Canada, where the race was broadcast live. The race was showed hours later on network television in the United States.

The Portland Press Herald says the room erupted when Wescott crossed the finish line first.

Maine Gov. John Baldacci was among the first officials to offer his congratulations to Wescott, who was a repeat gold medalist. Wescott won a gold in Italy in 2006.
