The Times Free Press has learned that Tom Kaufman will be named the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s new defensive coordinator. He replaces Brandon Staley, who left to become the outside linebackers coach for the Chicago Bears.
Kaufman was most recently the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Syracuse, where he spent the 2016 season. He has been in the coaching ranks since graduating from John Carroll in 2003, which have included stops at Football Bowl Subdivision programs Mississippi State, Kansas, Texas, Bowling Green and Syracuse. He is also familiar with the Football Championship Subdivision, having spent two seasons at Eastern Illinois, both of which ended in the FCS playoffs.
He played with new UTC head coach Tom Arth at John Carroll.
