EJ Carter remembers when he was young, running up and down the sidelines as a water boy at semi-pro football games cheering on his dad — and also wanting to be like him.
Headed into his senior season at Notre Dame High School, Carter is one of the top returning running backs in the state, coming off a major breakout season in which the speedster had over 1,600 rushing yards in just 10 games.
The 5-foot-10, 175-pounder is expected to soar in a new up-tempo offense under first-year Fighting Irish head coach Brent Hill. After averaging 21 touches per game last season, Carter could very well come close to 30 or more in most games as his team plans to use him in a role similar to the San Francisco 49ers Christian McCaffrey, an every-down back who excels in the run and pass game.
Carter, who is the area’s returning leading rusher in an area loaded with returning backfield stars, comes in at No. 10 on the Times Free Press’ Dynamite Dozen list of the top senior high school football players in the area ahead of the 2024 season.
