The Chattanooga Fire Department tweeted Sunday night that a firefighter was seriously injured when he was struck by a car while working a wreck on East Brainerd Road.

Orear was flagging traffic at the time, a news release from the Chattanooga Police Department said. A red Mercedes driven by Andrea L. Payne struck him, the release said, sending Orear over the passenger side of her vehicle.

Fire department spokesman Bruce Garner said Lt. Lawerence Orear’s injuries were as serious, but not life-threatening. Hamilton County Emergency Services took him to Erlanger, where he was said to be in stable condition, Garner said.

Chattanooga police said the driver of the vehicle that struck Orear is in custody and the investigation is continuing.
