Brainerd event features Flames

The official name of the golf tournament is the Brainerd Invitational.

But it may as well be the Lee University Flames Shootout, since four members of the current Lee team and five alumni are participating in the first Chattanooga TPC series event of the year.

“We want our guys playing in these events,” said Lee coach John Maupin, who will be traveling with the women’s team to the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament or else he’d be playing too.

“We’re fortunate that Mike (Jenkins) and them have these great two-day tournaments around the area, because they’re well run and great competition,” Maupin said. “They’re even one of our recruiting points.”

Junior Sam Bedwell will lead the current Flames contingent today and Sunday at Brainerd Golf Club. He won the 2008 Brainerd Invitational and missed out on the playoff last year by one stroke after making the turn at 5 under par.
