Ask a Doctor: How can I choose a qualified plastic surgeon to perform my procedures?

Q: How can I choose a qualified plastic surgeon to perform my procedures?

A: When deciding between plastic surgeons, be sure to look at the surgeons’ credentials. Plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) are among the most highly trained surgeons in the United States, required to meet specific educational, training and professional requirements. There is no other board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify plastic surgeons. Once you are satisfied with a surgeon’s credentials, schedule a consultation where you can meet with the surgeon of your choice to discuss your procedure of interest. Be sure to ask any questions you may have concerning the procedure, your surgeon’s experience and his or her hospital affiliations. Before and after photographs are often available for viewing at your consultation or on the surgeon’s website.
