Reaping the whirlwind over illegal aliens
Wow! I couldn’t believe it! Tucker Carlton on Fox was interviewing Austan Goolsbee, economics professor at the University of Chicago, and they were discussing how jobs, technology and illegal immigration affect our economy. Carlton asked the question why admit illegal immigrants to do jobs needed by American workers, and then Goolsbee dropped the bombshell. He said statistics show the native-born American fertility rate is not enough to sustain the population and that the birth rate is down. A Dem was admitting what all Dems know and never talk about: that is, America’s decimated working population. Sadly, the elephant in the room of abortion was not discussed and the fact that more than 60 million abortions have left America so bereft of fresh talent that she welcomes the invasion of other countries and cultures.
The argument that abortion aids the economy by not having to spend money to clothe and feed that population is fallacious because it ignores the fact a population that will work has been destroyed. The influx of illegal immigrants costs far more to clothe, feed, house and educate.
We reap what we sow and we are reaping the whirlwind.

Lunar eclipse misstep a good lesson for students
As a perennial fan of science news, I’d like to make a modest suggestion. Elementary school STEM teachers should consider saving Sunday’s “Lunar Display” article as an intriguing “What’s wrong with this picture?” puzzle. It would make a great exercise in critical thinking. The Getty Images graphic on page E5 is a beautiful diagram of an eclipse – just not a lunar one.

Capitalism, not racism, behind population moves
In last Sunday’s paper, columnist David Cook stated that black Chattanoogans are being “pushed” into the Rossville Boulevard area from the Main Street and Jefferson Heights area.
The thing that is “pushing” them to anywhere is dollars. Their property values have risen four to five times in value over the past two decades. They profited or will profit when and if they sell their investment. There was no pushing or coercion other than their decision to make money. They bought low and sold high to hipster white folks.
This is not racism, Mr. Cook, this is called capitalism. I wish you had taken at least one economics class in college and one less sociology class. We can all do more to improve racial harmony better in Chattanooga but labeling a dramatic increases in property values of a traditionally black area of town as racism is not one of them.

Mr. President, open the government
It’s unsettling to hear Republicans blame the refusal to fund Trump’s border wall, and hence the government shutdown, on Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats. The wall is a signature issue for Trump. Republicans had control of both houses of Congress for Trump’s first two years, and his own party did not build his wall, and neither did Mexico pay for one.
Democrats have always been against the wall, not because, in Trump’s twisted words, Democrats don’t want border security. All Americans want border security. Democrats, and I am sure many Republicans as well, want it based upon evidence of what is effective. Unfortunately, the wild claims from the White House and Homeland Security of the terrorist hordes headed toward the border have no basis in reality.
Trump said the other day “the buck stops everywhere.” No, Mr. President, the buck stops with you. This shutdown of yours is really hurting at least a million people. Open up the government and do your job.
