A canoe and kayak launch should soon be installed on West Chickamauga Creek at Battlefield Parkway.
A prefabricated launching dock is on order and “we are waiting for it to be delivered,” City Manager Ron Goulart said, following last week’s City Council meeting.
Goulart said he now has a canoe for use on Lake Chickamauga and said he thinks it will be “a lot of fun” to paddle the creek’s calm waters.
The dock is a companion to one being installed at Camp Jordan by the city of East Ridge. Both launch sites are being funded by grants from the Lyndhurst Foundation and will provide convenient access for paddlers to West Chickamauga Creek.
The creek meanders from the foot of Lookout Mountain near State Route 136, is dammed at Lee & Gordon Mill and serves as a boundary for Chickamauga National Military Park. From the park it flows past farms and a golf course, then parallels Dietz Road before crossing the state line into East Ridge on its way to the Tennessee River at Chattanooga’s Riverpark.
