Gourd and ready

Creative Discovery Museum will transform into Gourd Town on Saturday. Celebrating the harvest season and the multidimensionality of the common gourd, this homage to small-town fun is part of the museum’s annual Gourd Festival.

From noon to 4 p.m., guests may participate in demonstrations, music, art and games incorporating pumpkins, squash and other members of the gourd family.

“The Gourd Festival is a throwback to small-town events specializing in local traditions and home-grown ingredients,” said Liza Blair, the museum’s arts manager. “This event is intended to offer a time to celebrate the season and expand kids’ knowledge of gourds and how they can be used.”

The festival will feature food demonstrations using pumpkins and squash. Musicians and artists will share how they find creative uses for gourds in their works. Gourd sack races, a pumpkin roll and a squash toss are some of the games kids can enjoy. Guests may even be greeted by the Mayor of Gourd Town as he oversees the day’s festivities.
