Flash flooding along the Ocoee River forces evacuations

Flash flooding along the Ocoee River is forcing residents in southeast Polk County and parts of North Georgia to search for higher ground early Thursday morning.

“Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing flash flooding,” the National Weather Service said in a warning. The flash flood warning is in effect until 11 a.m.

“Local law enforcement reported widespread catastrophic flash flooding was still ongoing with numerous businesses and homes under several feet of water,” the NWS announcement said at 8:57 a.m.

Copperhill and Ducktown are two of the Polk County towns mentioned with possible flash flooding, according to NWS. Social media posts of McCaysville show cars and buildings submerged in water.
