CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Two teams stuck in traffic and late to arrive Friday put the Bradley Central Invitational in a bind from the start. Then problems with track wrestling, the tournament scoring software, went in and out nationwide on Saturday.
Beyond worrying about his team, host coach Ben Smith was near-migraine by Saturday afternoon.
Smith, young but by now a veteran, shouldn’t have stressed. His Bears came through with an 11-point victory over Father Ryan, thus avenging the drubbing they absorbed at Ryan’s hands in last weekend’s Cleveland Duals.
“I’m pretty glad this weekend’s over,” Smith said. “This tournament is always like a homecoming for our fan base and alumni and caps off the end of the semester and the beginning of a new year. When things don’t go smoothly, it was problematic. I feel like I’ve been behind the 8-ball since 4:30 Friday afternoon.”
Bradley scored 252.5 points to 241.5 for the runner-up Purple Irish, who left three starters at home. It became apparent early Saturday afternoon that the championship would be decided by just two of the 29 participating squads, and Bradley wound up successfully defending its tourney title.
“There are little things that I could probably gripe about, but overall we wrestled well,” Smith said. “We were solid in a lot of areas, and a couple of our unknowns came in and wrestled over their heads,” Smith said. “The field this year was probably tougher than last year because it was a more complete field. We had six or seven weight classes where defending state champions were being seeded third or fourth.”
Commerce (Ga.) finished third with 186.5, Stewarts Creek fourth with 128 and Gilmer (Ga.) fifth with 124. The rest of the top 10 consisted of Brookwood, Ala. (117), Ooltewah (102), Summitt (102), Knoxville Halls (99) and William Blount (98).
Among Chattanooga-area teams, Hixson was 17th (57), Central 20th (55) and Notre Dame 21st (53).
Meanwhile, Woodland from Georgia won the McCallie Invitational over Oak Mountain from Alabama. McCallie finished fourth, Red Bank sixth, Cleveland seventh, Ringgold eighth and Heritage ninth. Soddy-Daisy was 11th, Northwest Whitfield 12th and Ridgeland 20th in the 27-team field.
The Bears’ champions were T.J. Hicks (113), Ryan McElhaney (120), Knox Fuller (138), Donnie Beyer (152) and Brett Brown (195). Father Ryan weight-class winners were Trey Chalifoux (126) and Kirby Simpson (132).
Other winners at Bradley were Buford’s Logan Ashton (106), Commerce’s Owen Brown (145) and Cole Chancey (182), Blackman’s Matthew Sells (160), Stewarts Creek’s John Olivieri (170), Etowah’s Bronson Rechsteiner (220) and Gilmer’s Levi Seabolt (285).
Both Father Ryan and Bradley have wrestlers who were unable to compete because of the sports descent plan.
“We’ve got a couple of kids coming down, just like Father Ryan,” Smith said. “They’ve been dealing with the flu bug and their team this weekend probably wasn’t their best lineup, but I’m not going to take away from what our guys accomplished. We wrestled well against the kids that were out there in front of us.”
Said Father Ryan coach Pat Simpson: “We had two or three out, but that’s no excuse. If you’re out there, you’re expected to win. We might have three out at the state tournament, so (having wrestlers out) is no excuse.
“This tournament this year is just like last year: It’s tough. Really tough. We have some really tough kids, and we have some that are going to have to get a lot tougher.”
