Forecasters warning of severe thunderstorms throughout Georgia

ATLANTA — The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch spanning much of north, central and south Georgia.

The thunderstorm watch includes more than 90 counties and is expected to expire Wednesday night. A severe thunderstorm watch forecasters issued in the metro Atlanta area warned of wind gusts of up to 60 mph and penny-sized hail.

Forecasters say thunderstorms are expected throughout the state and some could damage buildings, power lines and trees. Officials say the storms are expected to include frequent lightning, heavy rain and flash flooding in some areas.

Officials say the heat index in parts of central Georgia is still 105 degrees and a heat advisory also remains in effect until 8 p.m.
