GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Visitors to the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site have voted against his impeachment.
They vote every year on the anniversary of his impeachment trial. According to The Greeneville Sun, this year the tally was 560 “guilty” votes and 5,200 “not guilty” votes.
Johnson was acquitted of impeachment charges by one vote by the U.S. Senate in 1868. The charges focused on a violation of the Tenure of Office Act for removing Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, though historians say the real issue was a power struggle with Congress.
Johnson, who lived in Greeneville, died in 1875. He was the 17th president.
