Good morning, Chattanooga!
Now that spring is here, bringing with it a new planting season, many area farmers markets are opening back up. When it’s open, I tend to go to the Chattanooga Market two to three times a month because it’s close to home. And for those who live in Northwest Georgia, that area’s share of producers and organizers is growing and fostering community.
“To start a farmers market starts with pure love of supporting farms and the local scene,” said Mackenzie Boisvert, who manages the Walker County Farmers Market and thinks every community should be home to a farmers market. “No one gets into starting a market thinking they will gain money running one. It’s more like you are having an avenue to help small local vendors support their dreams.”
Some of the markets have a special commitment to local buying, as they are producer-only organizations.
“You have to grow it, bake it or craft it with your own hands. And it’s [created] within 50 square miles,” Boisvert said of the Walker County market.
