Chattanooga History Center still has a few months of construction before its new home opens next year. But it’s possible to get a preview of coming attractions Tuesday at the first in a series of Gallery Talks.

The series will examine each gallery visitors will encounter in the center’s new exhibit, leading off with “The Cherokee Nation: Struggle for Sovereignty.”

Each lecture will stand alone as an independent program.

“The Cherokee Nation” will discuss the core story that backs up the content of the first gallery in the new CHC exhibit and the research that developed it, according to Marlene Payne.

“Most people have a rudimentary knowledge of the forced removal of Cherokee people and their tragic journey on the Trail of Tears,” she said in a news release. “The story, however, began many years before the eviction and is a complicated study of not only collision of cultures but also of human motivation, and it is the story of a legal battle that pits two strong leaders of nations against one another.”

Each session in the Gallery Talks series also will feature an examination of the reasons certain artifacts were chosen for the new exhibit and, in some sessions, the artifacts themselves, she said.

Presenting the program is Dr. Daryl Black, executive director and historian.

Space is limited. Registration is required by Monday. Call 265-3247 to register.
