VONORE, Tenn. – Fort Loudoun State Historic Area continues its winter lecture series on Saturday, featuring Arthur “Butch” McDade on Horace Kephart.

Mr. Kephart was prominently featured in the recent Ken Burns television documentary on national parks. He wrote “Our Southern Highlanders” in 1913.

Still in print today, the book tells about Appalachian mountaineers and their way of life. Mr. Kephart was one of the promoters of creating the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Mr. McDade recently retired after 35 years as a National Park Service ranger. He has also written numerous books and articles.

The series began last week with Dr. Jefferson Chapman’s talk on “10,000 Years of Native American History in Tennessee,” said Fort Loudoun spokeswoman Angie King.

Dr. Chapman is director of the Frank H. McClung Museum at the University of Tennessee and a research associate in anthropology. He has more than 40 years experience conducting Tennessee archeology and has written numerous books and articles.

The lectures are free and are held on Saturdays at 2 p.m.

Fort Loudoun State Historic Area is at 338 Fort Loudoun Road in Vonore, Tenn.
