Will immigration fight be shutdown rerun or dawn of hope?

The GOP is trying to find its way out of the red corner it has painted itself into with threats to withhold funds for the Department of Homeland Security as a way to punish the president over his immigration stance.

“It is a risky moment for the new congressional majority,” The New York Times wrote earlier this week.

Risky, indeed. Americans were not pleased with the shutdowns of 2013 and they are uneasy this year at the thought of furloughing the nation’s homeland security force — especially with terrorist threats in the news constantly.

“A nasty partisan impasse over funding for a vital agency would probably damage the party’s brand just months after Republicans took power, and the impact could carry over into the next election cycle,” The New York Times stated this week.

The paper quoted Oklahoma Republican and GOP strategist Rep. Tom Cole: “I don’t think shutdowns and showdowns are the way to win the presidency in 2016.”
