For the 11th year, metered parking spots along Martin Luther King Boulevard will become mini parks for a day.

The annual Park(ing) Day will be 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, and aims to highlight the need for open space in the urban core, according to a news release from the Chattanooga Design Studio. This year, the event will be on Patten Parkway near the Volunteer Building.

Several organizations will host interactive “parklets” during the day, including the Chattanooga Department of Transportation, Summit Pianos, Moms for Social Justice, GreenTrips, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga student organizations, Public Education Foundation and others.

Activities will include carpool karaoke, belly-dancing demonstrations, musical performances, free food and drink samples, reading rooms, stress relief strategies, games and more.

Park(ing) Day is free and open to the public.
