Yesterday we held our annual newsroom “ugly sweater contest” – a holiday tradition which seems to have become as common as cookie decorating.
Have you ever wondered where the trend originated?
Interestingly, Canada claims to be the birthplace of the ugly Christmas sweater party. According to legend (or, this HuffPost article), two British-Columbian college students say they hosted the first-known public party celebrating ugly sweaters in 2004.
Of course, that’s difficult to prove. But regardless of how it all began, one thing is certain, ugly sweaters are as joyful as they are tacky. So embrace the ugly. Our staff certainly did. Scroll down to see a photo of our winner.
