VW earnings fall in 2nd quarter

Volkswagen says second-quarter profits fell by more than half compared with the same period last year, before the company was hit by the emissions cheating scandal.

The German automaker says it earned $1.32 billion after tax in the April-June period.

Matthias Mueller, chairman of the board of management of the Volkswagen Group, said that particularly in light of the current special items, officials can be satisfied with its results for the first half-year.

“The figures show that our operating business is sound. With our brands the Group is built on many strong pillars. Building on these foundations we will transform the Volkswagen Group with our Together Strategy 2025 from a carmaker into a world-leading provider of sustainable mobility,” he said in a statement.

VW is spending $900 million, including $600 million in Tennessee, to expand its Chattanooga production plant to assemble a new sport utility vehicle. The midsize SUV is slated to hit dealerships early next year.
