New Zealand is on the other side of the globe. So it is not often big in “our” news. But when human lives were involved this week, our interest was attracted to a scary situation.
Two 15-year-old boys and one 14-year-old were trying to row their boat between two islands – when they simply “disappeared.”
Just imagine their parents’ anxiety. Searches by the New Zealand air force were fruitless. Distraught parents were sure their children had perished. Sadly, the families held a memorial service for the boys.
Then – after the three boys had been missing for 50 days – a tuna fishing boat in the Pacific off Fiji happened upon the boys’ boat! It had drifted 800 miles, but the boys were alive!
They had caught some fish, and a seagull that had landed on their boat had been caught and devoured. Despite dehydration and loss of weight, the boys seemed miraculously to be OK.
Don’t we all love “happy endings”?
Even fictional Huck Finn couldn’t equal this true-life story, could he?
