Avondale residents will soon have a new community haven to study, find career development opportunities, play and much more.
Later this month, city officials will hold a meeting to unveil the final rendering of the new Avondale Youth and Family Development Center, with a groundbreaking expected this fall.
The $6 million project will double the space of the current Avondale YFD, allowing for more room for library partnership opportunities, continuing education opportunities, space rentals and recreation activities, said city Department of Youth and Family Development Communications Coordinator Enora Moss.
The old facility, at 1305 Dodson Ave., is 68 years old. It will remain open until the new facility, located near the corner of Dodson Avenue and Wilcox Boulevard, is completed.
“It’s about offering a place of resource,” Moss said. “The Youth and Family Development Center is so much more than just a recreation center. It’s career development, it’s a partnership with the library, a place to wind down, to continue your education with the software and platforms we provide. It’s a hub for the community.
“This is what the community asked for and wanted. It’s something we can feel proud of.”
The July meeting date for the unveiling of the final rendering has not yet been decided. Anyone interested in staying informed about the Avondale YFD or other neighborhood news can sign up for updates at connect.chattanooga.gov/avondale.
