Dave Ennis does pull-ups at CrossFit Hixson. An adapted athlete, Ennis is paralyzed from the chest down. Amber Reeves, the owner of CrossFit Hixson, said she wants to show the community that athletes like Ennis can benefit from CrossFit just as much as someone able-bodied.

“I want to create some awareness in the community and show that CrossFit is doable for all populations, and for them to see athletes that are adapted participate alongside able-bodied athletes,” Reeves said.

Reeves said she’s aware how difficult it can be for adapted athletes to find a welcoming community and fitness routine with someone who’s willing to work alongside them. She’s looking to offer a fitness program that will create a better quality of life for all members of her gym.

To raise awareness and funds, Reeves’ gym will host WOD for Wheels, a demonstration day where adaptive and traditional athletes will take the floor together.

The event will be Sept. 10 at CrossFit Hixson. Attendance is free, although Reeves said donations are appreciated, and will go toward the development of a program for adaptive athletes at CrossFit Hixson.
