While the most-popular months for weddings are still a ways off, couples are beginning to make plans, choosing locations and attire, deciding on the menu and on who will do the flowers. Brides-to-be looking to cut costs might consider making their own bouquets.
Dennis Grafe, owner of Grafe Studio in St. Elmo, will teach a three-session class on making bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres and table centerpieces later this month. The sessions are scheduled 6:30-8:30 p.m. March 22, 29 and April 5 at the Grafe studio, 4008 Tennessee Ave. Cost is $75. For information, call 468-4172.
Mr. Grafe said brides who opt for the do-it-yourself approach can purchase flowers at a favorite florist or grocery store. Remember to buy the freshest flowers possible as they will last longer, he said. If the flowers are fresh, the bouquets may be made up to 48 hours in advance, but be sure to keep them in a cool place in a vase of water.
Here are five beautiful combinations of flowers for wedding bouquets.
1 Gerbera daisies: They come in a wide range of colors and are perfect for the modern bride who wants color and simplicity.
2 Hydrangea and roses: Perfect for the bride wanting a traditional look with a garden feel.
3 Mixed flowers: One of the top trends for 2010, they add a lot of texture and use “a lot of green and other natural colors,” Mr. Grafe said.
4 Mini Calla lily: Offers classic elegance for the bride wanting to make an elegant statement.
5 Roses: The most popular flower for weddings, they come in a wide range of colors to pair with wedding attire.
