The Music Department at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will present a UTC Opera performance of “The Magic Flute” twice this weekend.
The fairy-tale opera is considered one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most popular works. He composed it just months before his death in 1791.
The story concerns the young prince Tamino’s search for love and truth, a mother’s love and her search for vengeance, and the endearing bird-catcher, Papageno, and his search for his perfect mate. Set in a mystical time and place, their stories intertwine in some of Mozart’s greatest music.
“Our production will be slightly abridged and will include the use of narration to replace much of the dialogue,” says UTC Opera director Perry Ward in a news release. “It is appropriate for all ages.”
Ward is providing stage direction for the production, with music direction by Tim Hinck. It features sets by James Marvel and the UT Knoxville Opera Theatre. Costumes are by Brenda Schwab of Chattanooga State Community College.
UTC students participating in the production include Connor Behrmann, Ben Brooks, Jeron Burney, Laura Childers, Sara Hrivnak, Glory Larm, Grace Partin and Kayla Petrille. Rounding out the cast are UTC alumni Laura Cofer and Kim Thompson, plus members of the Chattanooga Boys Choir, directed by Vic Oakes.
