Syrian site ‘very likely’ nuclear

There is no end of the criticism that Israel faces from the U.N. and the “international community” whenever it takes steps to protect its national security.

One of those steps was Israel’s strike in 2007 on a suspected nuclear site in terrorism-sponsoring Syria.

The raid destroyed the facility, which Syria denied had nuclear purposes.

But now, four long years later, even the U.N.’s own nuclear oversight agency has acknowledged that the Syrian site was “very likely” a secret nuclear reactor – a violation of Syria’s pledge to notify the U.N. of any such project. Just as alarming, the plant evidently was designed by Communist North Korea, which is now known to possess nuclear weapons.

The reactor in Syria could have paved the way for that unstable, menacing country to produce nuclear weapons, so it was plainly in Israel’s interests to destroy it. The bombing of the site also kept the world from having to rely on the U.N. to deal with Syria’s disturbing nuclear ambitions.

Israel sensibly realizes it cannot depend on an unaccountable international body such as the U.N. when it comes to national security. Neither can the United States or any other country.
