Brainerd Methodist Preschool to remain open

After a shaky start to 2014, Brainerd United Methodist Church preschool representatives are relieved the school will remain open for the neighborhood.

The preschool’s future was called into question last month after funding for the program beyond May 2014 seemed scarce, but the board of directors voted to continue the program indefinitely, said preschool Director Kelcy Chambers.

The preschool formed a self-sustaining business plan that will continue to outline how the operation is funded.

“We are so excited to be able to stay open,” Chambers said. “We’ve been open for three years now and we’re still enrolling students in our classes.”

The preschool serves nearly 70 students but can accommodate up to 130, including those ages 6 months to 5 years.

“While many preschools close for the summer, we stay open with our own summer program,” Chambers said. “We extend that to school-aged kids up to 10 years old.”

What better way to celebrate than with a Valentine’s dance? The annual event, being held this year Friday, Feb. 7, is open to the community.

“This is something we did last year, except for dads and their daughters, but we wanted to open it to everyone this year,” said Chambers.

Tickets cost $15 for a couple or $20 for three people and include music, dancing and heavy hors d’oeuvres. The event will begin with pictures at 5:30 p.m. and conclude at 9:30 p.m.

“Everyone can enjoy this event with our photobooth-style photos with props,” Chambers said. “People really like to come out and enjoy it.”
