LaFAYETTE: ‘Change for Haiti’ at county schools

Students and staff in Walker County Schools are closely following the tragic news and heartfelt stories stemming from the disastrous earthquake and aftershocks in Haiti. As the desperate plight of the wounded and homeless, many of them children, comes to light, concern and care for these families and orphaned children continue to grow.

In times past, each school has conducted humanitarian fundraising projects individually for needs important to their students and staff. However, with the enormity of the current and future needs in Haiti, the entire district is joining together for one, concentrated effort, “Change for Haiti.”

Through Friday, all Walker County Schools are collecting coins for “Change for Haiti.” Donations may be submitted through students or employees or directly delivered to a parent involvement specialist at any Walker County school. Donations will be channeled to the American Red Cross International Response Fund to continue humanitarian efforts such as food, water, tents, basic supplies, first aid and family linking services.

“Change for Haiti” is not designed as a one-time effort only to clean up the aftermath of the earthquake, although much is needed to accomplish that task. Students in Walker County Schools desire to promote change in the lives of Haitian children, to help create a better future, such as purifying the water supply through Red Cross assistance.

To help change the lives of children in Haiti, bring coins to Walker County Schools in support of “Change for Haiti.” For more information, contact Margaret Lamb at 706-638-1240.
