Jones provided a vital service
Recently, you announced the retirement of Eleanor Jones, the district manager of the area’s Social Security office.
Ms. Jones has provided a great service to Chattanoogans in her regular columns for the Chattanooga Times Free Press. She has done much to simplify and personalize the complex issues and regulations surrounding Social Security benefits. From every column that I have read over the years, I never failed to take away a nugget of knowledge to help me in advising my clients.
Thank you, Ms. Jones. I have greatly enjoyed your column and want to wish you the very best in this new phase of your life. Happy retirement.

Good Samaritan in the right place
On Jan. 3, my husband and I set out for Knoxville on I-75. At Ooltewah a man in a pickup truck behind us began signaling us something was wrong. It seemed we had a flat tire, which we hadn’t noticed. Then, it began thumping, but there was nowhere to get off the road.
In a few moments I saw an abandoned service station. I pulled into it and stopped. The pickup truck had followed us, and he, too, stopped.
A young man (we are in our 80s) got out. We got out, and we three looked at the flat tire. It was a goner — ripped and torn. The man insisted on changing the tire for us. Since age and arthritis prevented our even assisting him, we stood by. After removing the jack and the spare tire, he made the change!
What a lifesaver he was, and what a wonderful deed he did for us. We found out his name, Tom Bunch. We thanked him profusely. He pointed out a Walmart across the highway where we could buy a new tire — which we did and then drove on to Knoxville.
It’s wonderful people like Tom Bunch who are the Good Samaritans of this world. Thanks very much, Tom.

Cartoons provide satire and balance
A letter to the editor (Jan. 6) caused me to find and re-examine the political cartoons of Clay Bennett in the Sunday paper. On Sunday I enjoyed them, and having seen them again, I must say that they represent the best satire on our political life. Keep up the good work.
Another letter complained about “Doonesbury.” I have enjoyed the strip since its beginning, and I must say that any newspaper which includes “Mallard Fillmore,” which I enjoy also, in its comics needs the balance which “Doonesbury” provides.
