Western Carolina coach Dennis Wagner is still trying to figure out what kind of football team he has. And for good reason.
The Catamounts, who host the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga at Whitmire Stadium on Saturday, have been on a roller-coaster ride for the first three weeks.
With an “embarrassing” home loss, an impressive road win, injuries, a couple of cases of mononucleosis and suspensions, it’s been hard for Wagner, or anyone else, to get a true feel for the team.
Wagner said during Tuesday’s Southern Conference media teleconference that the Catamounts’ identity was “still developing.” The top reason for that, he said, was personnel.
“We haven’t had the same lineup on the field since we started the season,” he said. “Due to some injuries, suspensions, that type of thing, we’re not really where we need to be yet; [we don’t] have the players that we anticipated when we started fall camp.”
