Calhoun man charged with raping child

CALHOUN, Tenn. – A Calhoun man is behind bars after being charged Tuesday with three counts of rape of a child, according to a McMinn County Sheriff’s Office news release.

James Brown, 25, of 303 County Road 31, was served warrants for his arrest by Sgt. Detective Greg Earps of the McMinn County Sheriff’s Office.

Earps said the man was indicted by the grand jury on evidence of raping an 11-year-old female, the release said.

“This was a situation brought to our attention by the Department of Children’s Services,” Earps said. “We investigated and turned what we found over to the grand jury and they prepared an indictment.”

According to a report filed by Earps, DNA evidence from both the child and Brown were sent to the lab for comparison. Brown was interviewed and did disclose that he had sexual contact with the victim, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Earps said the McMinn County Sheriff’s Office was prepared to go to trial with Brown over the charges, which are felonies.

Brown is currently being held at the McMinn County Justice Center on a $100,000 and is scheduled to be arraigned in Criminal Court on Sept. 2.
