Signal Mountain Nursery is hosting a seminar on miniature gardens, which are more manageable and less time-consuming than their regular-size counterparts and are a great project for kids, according to nursery manager Kim Bonastia.
“It’s kind of been a trend for the past few years and we’ve had lots of requests,” she said in regards to the upcoming workshop. “We decided to do a seminar where they make them at the nursery and take the garden home.”
Space is limited for the Saturday, March 17 seminar, which will be held at the nursery beginning at 10 a.m.
Often referred to as “fairy gardens,” as people often add fairies to their lilliputian landscapes, miniature gardens can be a fun and less costly way to exercise a green thumb.
The $40 cost for the how-to session covers a 12-inch container, 8-inch arbor, bench, rocks for stepping stones, soil and moss, and the participant can choose three plants from a selection including varieties compatible with indoor gardens as well as those which prosper in either sunny or shady spots outdoors.
“We sell a lot of the [miniature garden] products and have them put together in the store for people to get ideas,” said Bonastia. “You can use old birdbaths or wheelbarrows, and get the kids involved.”
Participants can purchase extra accessories for their gardens at the nursery, with options including miniature gnomes, gazebos, chandeliers, bicycles, houses, picket fences and more.
