Chattanooga readies for snow late Sunday

This weekend should be sunny and somewhat warm, but Sunday night snowfall could leave some areas with as much as 7 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

NWS representatives warned Murray County, Ga., officials to prepare for 5 to 7 inches Sunday night, and Tennessee NWS officials are predicting 2 to 4 inches in Chattanooga when “a pretty large system” hits the area.

Sam Roberts, a hydrometeorologist for the NWS, said the organization predicts a 75 percent chance of precipitation.

“Start to pay attention to the forecast,” he said. “Tomorrow we’ll start really putting stuff out.”

Chattanooga Public Works employees spent all Friday preparing for the storm, mixing up about 23,000 gallons of brine used to coat streets 12 to 24 hours before the storm.

Public Works Assistant Director Tony Boyd said road crews’ jobs should be done a day or so after the storm hits, but depending on snowfall and road conditions, it could take as long as four days.

“These guys are troopers. They love it,” he said. “It kinda turns into a competition over who can clear their area before the other.”
