The first days of summer can be the most brutal — between the blazing sun and heavy humidity that hits us so hard, for a moment we forget how much we love hot weather. Luckily, 1885 has the aperitifs to help us acclimate this season: a trio of freshly crafted, cool cocktails.

New to the restaurant’s bar menu is the “Scenic City Storm,” made with Champagne, crème de violette, elderflower, cucumber and lime juice — channeling all of the freshness of a summer rain shower.

Or, diners might sample 1885’s new after-dinner coffee cocktail, called the “Pick Me Up.” Featuring coffee-infused vodka, chocolate liqueur, amaretto and crème liqueur and served in a cinnamon-sugar rimmed martini glass, partner and manager Miguel de Jesus compared its taste to tiramisu, the creamy Italian custard confection. In fact, Miguel told me, the word “tiramisu” translates to “pick me up” or “cheer me up.”

Should your spirits need further lifting, 1885 has also introduced a new mimosa special that’s showcased during brunch every Saturday and Sunday. The special offers a more tropical take on the favorite brunch beverage, combining Champagne with coconut rum and pineapple instead of the typical orange juice.

“Tastes like a piña colada,” Miguel said.

And what tastes more like summer than a piña colada?

In addition to drinkable antidotes to the sultriest season, 1885 is now serving freshly caught, lightly fried blue crab claws with a side of remoulade — just spicy enough to remind us why we love the summer.
