Flintknapping on display at Archaeoskills

Flintknapping, the art of making stone tools, will be featured at Celebration of Archaeoskills this weekend at the Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park in Manchester, Tenn.

The event features demonstrations of prehistoric lifeways and will feature flintknappers from around the country. Demonstrations will include atlatl (spear-propelling technology), American Indian pottery production, native plant use, fingerweaving, gourd work, fire starting and cordage. Guest archaeologists will present programs.

The Old Stone Fort is a 2,000-year-old American Indian ceremonial site. The 50-acre hilltop enclosure mound site is believed to have served as a central ceremonial gathering place for 500 years.

Although events will be held today through Sunday, Saturday is the most significant day for scheduled demonstrations and programs. There is no charge to attend the programs.

Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park is off U.S. Highway 41 halfway between Chattanooga and Nashville. From I-24, turn southwest at the Highway 53 Exit 110 and follow the signs 1.5 miles to the park entrance.
