Near the top of the ascent of Signal Mountain Road, there is a sign listing community events – town meetings, plays, common fare not really uncommon among towns across the area.
But the sign features one prominent event for tonight, and it’s nearly 40 miles away in Marion County. Two facing football helmets – the logos easily recognized – and a distance-be-darned message in two simple words: “The Game.”
Signal Mountain High School visits South Pittsburg High School tonight for a football game that has been anticipated by prep football fans across the state for most of the season.
Each team has spent time atop the polls in its classification – Signal Mountain in Class 2A, South Pittsburg in 1A. Each team is unbeaten. Each team has state championship dreams.
Friday nights are always about high school football for these two rabid towns, but tonight it’s about “The Game.”
