Irony found in story about medical care

About Karen Nazor Hill’s Jan. 18 story “Nightmares in Foreign Lands”: I can’t help but marvel over the fact that so many of these foreign countries have better medical outcomes of health indicators, from infant mortality to longer life spans, than we have here, if as you write, their hospitals are such festering hell-holes of socialized medicine?!

Fund history museum and VW center

Regarding the Chattanooga History Center’s Museum and the Volkswagen Welcome Center: The city and county propose to give $6 million to the Volkswagen Welcome Center.

Why not instead give $3 million to the History Center? The museum has more to offer Chattanooga and Hamilton County.

First, it would provide education to college level and above as well as down to kindergarten.

Second, it would attract more tourists than an automobile showroom.

Third, it would add more prestige to our area than an automobile advertisement. In addition, haven’t we done enough for Volkswagen?

Why doesn’t Volkswagen show its good citizenship by giving $2 million to the Chattanooga History Center to help bring the museum to fruition?

Apple scolded for failing to help police

I find Apple’s refusal to assist Ali Ali’s brother and the Chattanooga Police Department egregious. I wish their decision would become national news.

Shame on them.

‘Disheartened’ over Cook’s VW view

David Cook’s narrow view of what VW means for Chattanooga is disheartening.

Chattanooga’s manufacturing heritage earned the moniker “Dynamo of Dixie” more than 100 years ago. We were manufacturing products before the Civil War.

More than 600 companies make products, from breath mints to heavy paving equipment.

Chattanooga is a “company town” to hundreds of manufacturers as well as service providers, the very reason tens of thousands of people are proud to work for these companies run by people who do have souls and care about their workforce.

VW has provided 12,400 direct and indirect jobs providing families with above-average income and benefits. VW and every other manufacturer provide stable jobs, increase our tax base, provide charitable giving and more. Is that not “giving back?”

VW’s talented and diversified employees are proud of their success and look forward to showcasing those achievements whether the VW Welcome Center is located at Enterprise South or down on the river.

By the way, Mr. Cook, none of VW’s success has anything to do with UAW!

Reader appreciates time spent on TFP

Congratulations on the paper’s recent awards. You are another feather in Chattanooga’s cap and another reason why it’s wonderful to live here.

I have two complaints — as a dyed-in-the-wool conservative, I feel you lean too much to the liberal viewpoint; but since I read that liberals find you too conservative, you must be doing it right.

My second complaint is that I spend too much time reading the paper and working the puzzles every day.

Keep up the good work.
