Illegal aliens and ObamaCare

In the final days before ObamaCare socialized medicine became law, Republicans introduced an amendment in the Senate to make sure that illegal aliens would not be able to gain medical benefits through the legislation.

The stated goal of the amendment was “to ensure that Americans are not required to pay for the health benefits for those here illegally by requiring the use of an effective eligibility verification system … .”

In other words, clear verification of citizenship or legal status in the United States would have been required before a person could get benefits under ObamaCare.

But 55 senators — all Democrats except two independents who usually side with Democrats — voted to kill the amendment. Only three Democrats voted with 40 Republicans in favor of the amendment. Months earlier, the result had been the same when conservatives in Congress tried to attach verification procedures to ObamaCare: They were blocked.

Democrats are now claiming that the legislation does bar illegal aliens. But that supposed prohibition is meaningless because they repeatedly refused to require verification of citizenship or legal status before one can access parts of ObamaCare.

The fact is, people who entered and remain in our nation illegally will have access to benefits under ObamaCare, which will increase the already unsustainable costs to American taxpayers.
